The Surfboard Project

Monday, July 9th, 2012

The Surfboard Project is a attempt to archive photos of surfboards shaped by the worlds most renowned shapers. Currently, there is no one place on the net that has attempted to archive the enormous amount of surfboards found in peoples garages, old barns, on walls, up in rafters and surf racks.

This project is currently in its infancy and needs your help. If you have pictures of boards your interested in submitted to archive on this site please email to surfboards@thesurfboardproject.com

Check out the website here at thesurfboardproject.com.  It will become an online surfboard museum.

BeardArt on Hollow Wooden Surfboard

Sunday, October 9th, 2011

Here are some of the pictures of the collaboration of Matt Beard and Taiyo Surfboards. Matt is finishing up this board at the Board Art Benefit which will be held at the Sacred Craft Del Mar. The board is an 8′10″ gun, made of redwood, western red cedar, and Port Orford cedar.

Before the board left Humboldt for Del Mar, it was displayed at Salty’s Surf N Tackle in Trinidad for, like, 20 minutes. More of Taiyo’s boards will be shown at Salty’s without notice, so stop by the shop when you come to check waves in the Westhaven & Trinidad area. They have great coffee, and the staff are awesome.

Riding the Breakers! Kookbox Plans

Friday, September 2nd, 2011

Here are some of the great Kookbox plans. This is where it all began. These boards are not only  the original hollow wooden surfboards but also the common ancestor of almost all of the modern surfboards. We will build one one of these days.

Chris from Portland sent us this picture of 11′8″ Sequoia SUP that he built with Taiyo’s frame. Impressive job, Chris!

This is a recently finished 7′0″ Swallowtail Quad. The fins are made of mainly local hardwoods such as Alder and Tan Oak.  The deck of this hollow wooden surfboard consists of Taiyo’s favorite lumbers: Redwood, Port Orford Cedar, and Western Red Cedar, all of which are sustainably harvested from our local forests.

Layia the Paipo

Saturday, March 26th, 2011

The little paipo, 33″ x 22″ x 5/8″, is named after our native dune plant, Beach Layia. It has a domed deck and 1/4″ concave bottom. The board was donated to a benefit event for Friends of the Dunes and Humboldt Surfrider, who are working hard to protect our coastal environment.

9′11″ Ceta

Saturday, December 25th, 2010

Ceta was born on the night of the winter solstice. It was a special night not only because of the solstice but also the total eclipse that coincided with it. The last total eclipse on the winter solstice was over 400 years ago or something crazy like that. I put the final layer of varnish right before the moon and the earth started to line up. This wooden surfboard will catch many waves to come, but it will never forget its connection to nature.

Taiyo at the 7th Annual Surf4Peace!

Sunday, September 26th, 2010

Surf4Peace was yesterday, the 25th of September, on a beautiful autumn day in Humboldt County, CA. What is Surf4Peace? Well, read the description below from Surf4Peace’s website to get the idea of this great event.

Surf4Peace is Humboldt County’s first and only non-profit surf contest. S4P was created to bring the Humboldt County surf and beach community together to benefit coastal and environmental sustainability… Surf4Peace donates all of its proceeds to a non profit organization every year that is geared towards peaceful and/or environmental action. This year S4P proceeds will benefit the Humboldt Surfrider Foundation in Arcata. Previous years S4P benefitted the Humboldt Surfriders Foundation, the Redwood Peace and Justice Center, reefrelief.org and the Northcoast Environmental Center. These donations helped to keep our beaches and ocean clean and to promote peaceful awareness and action in our community.

The event took place in the small town of Trinidad, and when I walked around town, I kept hearing people talking about the event, saying how awesome it was to have a surf contest there and to hang out on the beach with friends and families.

How Hard is it to Wax a Wooden Surfboard?

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Well, the answer to the question is… VERY HARD. You are looking at this beautiful wooden surfboard and about to wax the damn thing. You almost want to leave the beach and go home, forget about surfing, and hang the board back on the wall.

And, if you decide to do so, that’s okay. We understand your decision because Taiyo’s wooden surfboards are just too beautiful to be used, and nobody would disagree. However, for those of you who are interested in actually surfing one of our wooden boards, sooner or later, you have to wax it. And there are ways to make this process little easier.
