Scrap becomes…

Every wood shop has a scrap box. No matter how much we try not to produce waste, sooner or later, the box gets full. Well, that’s the law of nature. Waste is inevitable in the process of making something. Eventually, the entire universe will be filled with small pieces of useless scrap, according to the second law of thermodynamics. However, what we do here is totally beyond the law of the universe. We put the scrap pieces back together and bring them back to life! Check out this skateboard made out of materials from our scrap box!

What’s with Paulownia?

If you are interested in wooden surfboards, you’ve probably heard of Paulownia. You know, the kind of wood that they use to make Alaias? Paulownia wood is very light and warp resistant, which makes it perfect for making wooden surfboards, and the Paulownia boards, especially Alaias, do not need to be fiberglassed because of its fine grains. Everything about it sounds great, but for a long time, I hesitated to use Paulownia because I somehow thought that it came from some faraway forests, far far away from Northern California. Well, today, I found that I was wrong…
